What Are 3-Phase PAT Testers Used For?
3-phase PAT testing is typically required in industrial and construction environments where equipment like welders, motors, and large machinery operate on 3-phase power (usually 400V). Standard single-phase PAT testers cannot safely or effectively perform these tests without the appropriate adaptors and procedures in place.
When and Why You Need 3-Phase Testing
According to AS/NZS 3760, any electrical appliance that plugs into a 3-phase outlet (e.g., 20A, 32A, or 63A) must be tested before first use and at regular intervals.
The tests depend on the workplace risk environment and include:
- Factories and workshops
- Construction and demolition sites
- Commercial kitchens
- Plant and heavy equipment services
Failing to test 3-phase equipment correctly can pose serious safety risks.
