Wavecom TnT EL Review

If budget is your top priority and you only need to cover basic testing requirements, the Wavecom TnT EL is a viable option. It's easy to use, but the overall build quality and durability feel underwhelming, especially compared to slightly more expensive alternatives.
That said, it remains the cheapest portable appliance tester available in Australia and is suitable for people who test in low volume.
Pros:
- A very affordable option with battery power
- One-button push operation
- Lightweight and easy to carry
Cons:
- No RCD testing or memory function
- Flimsy construction
- A basic soft carry bag provides minimal protection
- Feels cheap in hand compared to other entry-level PAT Testers
Key Features of the TNT EL Generation 6
After hands-on testing and industry feedback in 2025, the TNT EL (Generation 6) is a practical, no-frills tester for those with very basic needs.
Designed as Wavecom's most budget-friendly model, it covers the essentials without offering much beyond that. While it's a good entry point for light users, its build quality and limitations make it better suited to occasional testers rather than those looking for long-term durability or expansion options.
Australia's Cheapest PAT Tester
The Wavecom TNT EL holds the title for being the most affordable tester on the Australian market. It's part of Wavecom's Generation 6 series and has been designed as a base model for beginners or those who need a low-cost backup unit.
Although the cheapest tester available in Australia now, it isn't the most useful in its price bracket.
Battery-Powered with Lithium-Ion Portability
Unlike older Wavecom testers from previous generations, the TNT EL now includes a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery - a welcome upgrade that improves portability. This makes it possible to complete multiple tests in one session without being tethered to a power outlet.
One-Button Operation
Testing is as simple as pressing the F1 or F2 buttons for Class I and Class II, respectively. This one-touch setup allows fast operation and is perfect for those just starting out.
There's no need to scroll through menus or toggle between test options - so this is all about simplicity.

How it Performs in the Field

Functionally, the TNT EL does what it promises - it tests appliances quickly, clearly displays results, and keeps the process simple for beginners. The display uses large, readable fonts with easy-to-understand icons and test outcomes are shown in real time.
It includes Wavecom's handy Meter Mode function, which lets you display live power readings (volts, amps, true power) straight from the connected socket. This can be useful for those wanting extra insight during testing. However, while the performance is fine for low-volume users, the build quality is a concern.
The unit feels light and plasticky and is less solid than comparable models. The included soft fabric carry bag adds minimal protection, which may be an issue for mobile users or those on job sites.
Drawbacks to Consider
This PAT Tester is priced low for a reason, and that shows in several areas:
- No RCD testing, so it won't meet the requirements for many environments
- No internal memory for saving results
- No upgrade path (e.g. printer or scanner support)
- Feels flimsy, especially compared to other entry-level testers
- Carry bag offers poor protection
While it works, it's not the kind of unit you'd want to throw around in a work van or use for large-scale testing - and it may not stand the test of time with heavy use.
Is it Worth the Investment?
The Wavecom TNT EL is all about price - and for some users, that's enough. If you're testing and tagging a few items now and then, and don't need memory storage or advanced features, this tester will get the job done.
But if you value durability, want to upgrade over time, or care about build quality, you're better off spending a bit more. Compared to the Seaward Primetest 125 EL, which feels more solid and performs similarly, the TNT EL falls short on feel and finish.
That said, it's still a popular choice for first-time users or small operations needing basic compliance.
