Key Features of TNP-500 Generation 6

After hands-on experience and plenty of feedback with the TNP-500 Generation 6 by Wavecom, it's clear why this portable appliance tester is a top choice for professionals needing efficiency and reliability.

Built with a focus on automation and designed for high-volume testing, this all-in-one kit is about making your job quicker, easier, and more accurate. It's packed with features like an in-built isolation transformer, thermal transfer printer and barcode scanner. Plus, it fits neatly into a rugged, heavy-duty carry case built for life on the road.

New In-built Isolation Transformer

With the release of the Generation 6 in 2024, the most notable upgrade is the inclusion of an in-built transformer.

In previous models, the user would have to buy a separate transformer to perform all the required electrical tests. Now, with this built-in feature, it basically eliminates the need for an extra accessory, saving both time and hassle.

Onboard Thermal Transfer Printer with Durable Tags

The built-in thermal transfer printer eliminates the need for handwritten tags. You can pre-load your logo and other details, and the unit will print each tag automatically in seconds.

The Thermal Transfer Tags are extremely tough and designed for harsh environments, making them ideal for industrial and commercial settings. This effectively means you can use them in any environment.

Plus, you can add up to four logos to each tag at no extra cost, ensuring every tag looks professional and consistent.

Barcode Scanner for Retesting

The included barcode scanner is perfect for high-volume testing. When it's time for retesting, simply scan the barcode on the electrical test tag to instantly pull up previous test details. At one point, for added flexibility, the TNP-500W model offered a wireless scanner option, which is ideal if you're constantly moving around job sites, but this model is now obsolete.

Huge Data Storage

The TNP-500 comes with an impressive storage capacity, holding up to 5,000 test records by default, with an optional upgrade to 20,000. Your test results are automatically stored on the portable appliance tester, including site details, description, make, model, location, serial number, asset number, frequency of testing, etc. This can then be transferred to your PC via the supplied WinPATs Software if you want to create professional-looking reports.

How the TNP-500 Performs in the Field

Wavecom TnP-500 Performance

The TNP-500 shines in environments where speed and accuracy are essential - like warehouses, commercial sites, and industrial facilities. The built-in printer and barcode scanner significantly cut down manual data entry, while the large storage capacity makes record-keeping straightforward. If you're testing hundreds of appliances in a single session, we found this unit makes the process faster and far less error-prone.

However, it's worth noting that this PAT testing kit is best suited for people with high testing volumes. While it's efficient, it requires proper setup to maximise its features. Some of its automation features might be overkill if you're only testing small batches occasionally.

Noticeably, this tester is very easy to use and has a logical user operation. This is highlighted by its simple one-button testing and rapid testing times. In addition, the progress of your test is shown on the display screen, along with actual results in a large and easy-to-read font and icons.

It comes with an optional 10A or 20A operation, although the more affordable 10A version is the more popular choice. More importantly, the appliance tester can perform all your essential tests, such as:

  • Leakage Current
  • Mains Supply Test
  • Power Measurement and Extension Leads
  • Adjustable 250V/500V Insulation Resistance

Drawbacks to Consider

One of the major drawbacks is that it operates only on mains power. It could be an issue if you often work on sites without easy access to power. In these cases, battery-powered options might be better suited.

There's also a significant learning curve for people new to testing and tagging. While it is user-friendly, a full-feature setup certainly requires some experience.

Is It Worth the Investment?

The TNP-500 Generation 6 secured its place in our most recent Top 5 PAT Testers for 2025 because it delivers on efficiency and automation. From the built-in printer to the barcode scanner and extensive data storage, every feature is designed to simplify your testing and tagging and reduce downtime.

If you're after an efficient and reliable test and tag print kit that easily handles high volumes, the TNP-500 is an investment that makes sense in the long run.
